The Hudson River Valley was the site of action, heroism, and
treason as the opposing forces fought their way through the colonies during the war for
American independence.
Battles raged from Manhattan to Saratoga as the New York Provincial Congress
accepted the Declaration of Independence in White Plains and adopted its constitution
in Kingston.
New York's first governor, George Clinton, fought the British at the battle
of Fort Montgomery. Sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington rode out of Carmel to raise
the militia to the defense of Danbury. Chief Daniel Nimham of the Wappingers
lost his life in battle for the cause of liberty. It was along the Hudson River
that Benedict Arnold proved himself first a hero, at Saratoga, and finally a traitor,
in the Highlands.
The course of the American Revolution flowed with the tides, north and south
along the Hudson River. The following lesson plans and historical
documents should allow you to trace this course as you wish.
