Historical Description:

The Howland Cultural Center was built as a library in 1872 by Joseph Howland, a Civil War General and prominent member of the shipping industry. He came together with ten other leaders in the village, then known as Matteawan, to establish the library. General Howland commissioned Richard Morris Hunt, his brother-in-law, to design the Norwegian styled building. The library was originally open only to paying members and contained 2,200 volumes. In 1976, the library had accumulated so many books that it was forced to move to another location. This library is now the site of the Howland Cultural Center Museum.

The Site:

The Howland Cultural Center is an art center for the visual and performing arts. The Center hosts art and music exhibits, including work of new Hudson Valley artists.  The Howland Cultural Center is also the home of the Howland Chamber Music Circle, which performs every Sunday at the Center at 4PM.  The Center also holds four annual classical music concerts for elementary age children.
