Native Americans and the Hudson River Valley Prehistory
Archaeological evidence has indicates the Hudson Valley was inhabited for nearly
7,000 years before the Dutch began to settle here. These native peoples - generally
known as the Mahicans, after the Native American name for the Hudson:
Mahicanituk, and the Lenape or Delaware - have left their own history
and legacies throughout the valley that was their home. Our knowledge
of their culture grows with each field-season, as archaeologists, anthropologists,
and tribal associations around the Valley systematically recover additional
information about their material culture, subsistence, and habitation patterns.
Lesson plans on Native Americans in the Hudson River Valley will survey
the various indigenous residents of the Valley throughout the eras, and
will also serve as an introduction to recent archaeology in the Valley.
