Teaching with Historic Places

Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses properties listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places to enliven history, social studies, geography, civics, and other subjects. TwHP has created a variety of products and activities that help teachers bring historic places into the classroom. This page includes lesson plans on The Battles of Saratoga, Bennington, and Oriskany, Val-Kill, Martin Van Buren’s estate Lindenwald, F.D.R.’s Springwood, and the Vanderbilt Mansion.

National Park Service Week 2004

“National Park Week is proclaimed each year by the President of the United States to recognize and celebrate the National Parks. America's National Park system contains living examples of some of the best things our nation has to offer—magnificent natural landscapes and places that reflect our diverse heritage.” Listed below are the homepages for some of the NPS sites in our backyards:

Vanderbilt http://www.nps.gov/vama/home.htm
Lindenwald http://www.nps.gov/mava/
Sprinwood http://www.nps.gov/hofr/hofrhome.html

"Visitors to the Park Service's Hyde Park Sites will also want to see the newly opened Wallace Center: http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/wcimages.html."

This Month’s Featured Historic Town

of the Hudson River Valley

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is a residential community with very little industry, although neighboring municipalities are the home for major companies. Citizens of Hyde Park are constantly working at preserving the historic qualities of the town, as well as the trademark stone walls which line many of the streets throughout the town. Hyde Park welcomes visitors to visit their many interesting shops and restaurants.
