Chaining the Hudson
An event is being planned for 2-4 May 2003 at West Point and Constitution
Island to salute the technological achievement of forging the Great Chain
and floating it across the river for the first time on 30 April 1778.
Participants at Constitution Island will also join symbolically in the
feu de joie at Valley Forge in commemoration of the 225th anniversary
of Congress’ debate and ratification of the Treaty
of Amity and Commerce of 1778. To follow the events of the 225th Anniversary

Feu De Joie at Valley Forge
Valley Forge Historical Park (PA) will hold a "Grand Military Formation"
(with hundreds of re-enactors) similar to celebrate the signing of the
treaties of alliance with France.

This Web site is based upon the exhibition “Independence
and its Enemies in New York,” which ran at The New-York Historical
Society from June 19- September 19, 2001.

This Month's Featured Historic site
Boscobel Restoration
A Great House on the East bank of the Hudson River between
Garrison and Cold Spring, across from West Point. This Federal Era (1808)
country house is a house museum for high-style New York furniture and
decorative arts. Their collection of Duncan Phyfe is notable. In 1956
Boscobel was saved from destruction, moved north from Montrose to its
present location and furnished to the tastes of a Loyalist nouveau country
gentleman of the early 19th century. The grounds include a superb rose
garden, a woodland trail and glorious views of the Hudson.
Open from April first to December thirty-first, everyday
except Tuesday. Escorted tours by knowledgeable docents. The usual orientation
and restroom amenities plus a gift shop featuring books on the Hudson
River Valley. Picnics encouraged. Admission $11.00. Ample parking. Host
of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in the summer.
