This Month's Featured Website
Frederic
Church's Olana
|
“Church Created Olana in the same way that he planned a work
of art: pencil sketches followed by more finished color sketches.
Then, instead of painting the final work of art, he built it. He
also chose and mixed on his palette the colors of every room, and
designed the exterior and interior stencils…. By 1891, Olana
as a singular work of art by one of America's greatest artists,
was complete….The Olana Partnership…advocate(s) for
and support the preservation of Olana and its integral viewshed,
to sponsor educational programs, and to foster scholarly educational
research on the artist and his property. The Olana Partnership are
partners in the operation of Olana State Historic Site.” |

This Months’s Featured Historic Site
“Cedar
Grove, the home of Thomas Cole, is one of a very limited number
of National Historic Landmarks having extraordinary significance
in the cultural development of the United States... it was here…that
Thomas Cole established a tradition of native American landscape
painting which continues to grow in importance and has come to be
identified as the Hudson River School of Art.” |

This Month’s Featured Historic Town
of the Hudson River Valley
Hudson
| The
Town was named for the river and for explorer Henry Hudson. Hudson
was once a busy port city, frequented by whalers carrying whale
oil and sealskins - which explains the whale that graces their street
signs. Situated between the Catskills and the Berkshires, Hudson
is currently enjoying a renaissance centered around its antique
shops. It is also less than 30 minutes north of Olana, and not much
more than the same from Cedar Grove. |
