About the maps
TrailTripTip: To find Fort Washington, continue east on Garden Street and then bear right onto JFK Street. Just before the river, turn left onto Route 3 (Memorial Drive) and folow that east along the riverbank to Brookline Street. Get off onto Brookline Street north (don't cross the bridge over the river) and go to Henry Street and turn right. Follow that as it turns into Waverly Street in about two blocks and watch for fort on right. It has an iron fence around it.

Context: The goal of the expedition was accomplished when Henry Knox delivered the cannon to General Washington's fortified encampment in Cambridge. This marker on Cambridge Common reads:

At this place
General Henry Knox
delivered to
General George Washington
in January, 1776
the train of artillery
brought from
Fort Ticonderoga
to force the enemy to
evacuate Boston
Erected by the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts 1927

The cannon were probably distributed among the several fortified areas in Cambridge. From here, at the time determined to be appropriate, they would be advanced to the artillery position on Dorchester Heights
