Women's history in the Empire State goes hand in hand with New York's history as a progressive leader. From education to health care to civil equality, women have been a driving force behind almost every reform movement in our state.

This past week, in honor of Women's History Month, Governor Cuomo opened a new exhibit at the State Capitol honoring the remarkable women who have led New York and the nation.

African-American Experience in New York

Join your fellow New Yorkers in taking this opportunity to study the accomplishments and role of the Black community throughout New York's, and our nation's, history. These contributions speak to New York State's role as a beacon of progress and home to transformative leaders in every era. It was in Auburn, NY, where Harriet Tubman made her home following her courageous escape from slavery on the Underground Railroad. Our state was also the birthplace of Freedom's Journal in 1827, the first African-American owned and published newspaper in the country, as well as the landmark civil rights group, the NAACP (1909).

Colonel Jay in the Civil War

For generations, Chief Justice John Jay and his descendants fought tooth and nail to abolish slavery in the United States. Jay's son Peter Augustus Jay, and his youngest son William Jay, both were publicly and ideologically opposed to slavery. When America the Civil War began, Colonel William Jay (also known as "the Colonel") represented the Jay's honorably; not only in his civic duties, but also to finish what his ancestors started, and rid the nation of slavery once and for all.

Autumn 2011 Review still available!

It's been eight years since The Hudson River Valley Review has devoted an issue to the American Revolution, arguably the most pivotal event ever to occur in the region. Since there has been a wealth of intriguing new scholarship about the war's impact on the valley, the time seems ripe to revisit the topic.
The articles in this issue illustrate that no one living in the Hudson Valley between 1775 and 1783 escaped the Revolution. Every aspect of life--governance, the economy, even neighborly relations--was thrown into chaos by the conflict. Indeed, all that was certain was uncertainty. It held sway over everyone, from the privates in George Washington's Continental Army to the drafters of New York's Constitution to the farmers tending the region's fertile fields.

New Review - The Civil War

In honor of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War, this issue of The Hudson River Valley Review gives our readers a different take on the conflict than our previous edition on the same topic in the Autumn of 2005. Recognizing other aspects of the conflict than the combat experiences of various Hudson Valley
regiments as the previous issue had, this issue explores the ways the Civil War was memorialized in Hudson River Valley art (Kevin J. Avery's "'Rally 'round the Flag': Frederic Edwin Church and the Civil War" and Valerie Balint's "'A Labor of Love and Patriotism': The Artistic and Historic Legacy of Albany's General Philip H. Sheridan Memorial"), thought about in letters home (Diane Shewchuk's
"'All is excitement and anxiety here': A New York Family's Experience of the Civil War" and Gail Goldsmith's "Letters Home: Carrie Niles' Correspondence"), mythologized through the manufacturing of iconic regimental flags ("Christopher Morton's "With Victory Perched Upon Their Eagles: Civil War Flags from the New York State Battle Flag Collection"), and prepared for through the influence of West Point upon the Union's officer corps (Jonathan Howard Lawler's "The West
Point Education of the 'Christian General': Oliver Otis Howard, 1850-1861").

Olana Symposium

The Olana Partnership is organizing a symposium entitled: Framing the Viewshed: The Transformative Power of Art and Landscape in the Hudson Valley. The symposium, to be held on April 16, 2011, will offer a fresh look at iconic Hudson Valley scenes through the lens of art history, environmental conservation, and landscape architecture. Attached is an e-invite.

The speakers will be art historian Linda Ferber, Vice President & Senior Art Historian at the New York Historical Society; Harvey Flad, Emeritus Vassar Professor of Geography; and landscape architect Laurie Olin. Following the talks there will be a panel moderated by David Schuyler, Professor of American Studies at Franklin and Marshall College and author of the Downing biography.

As part of the event, The Olana Partnership is designing a program guide and web page devoted to the symposium. We are inviting a select group of individuals who we believe have a unique perspective on "viewsheds" to express their thoughts in a few words or sentences, up to 100 words. We welcome all thoughts, whether they address the particular views of the Hudson Valley or the broader significance of viewsheds. All of the "words on viewsheds" will be posted on the website and a selection will be published in the program guide.

Regional Journal seeks "Winter Work"

Awosting Alchemy likes words. "Awosting" is taken from a lake and a waterfall in the Hudson Valley that provide endless inspiration to those who enjoy their waters. "Alchemy" is our favorite magical expression, relating to the idea of turning the ordinary into gold. We think the Hudson Valley offers an alchemical experience for so many and deserves some recognition. We hope you will enjoy the work of the many talented artists and writers who live, play, dream about, and otherwise are connected to the Hudson Valley.
