Topohistorical pictoriographer James Lancel McElhinney, author of Sketchbook Traveler: Hudson Valley envisions the arts as a powerful way to link heritage sites with environmental travel. Following fabled waterways and historic campaign-routes, McElhinney has revived the practice of topographical journaling to mine the physical memories of exploration, conflict and settlement. Promoting more mindful engagements with nature through drawing, writing, and photography fosters a reverence for history, environmental sustainability, and ecological civics. McElhinney’s lecture will unpack the historic backstory of his own practice while exploring how the arts can be used to interpret key elements of Hudson River Valley history to a diverse citizenry, to advance public education, and to promote community engagement.

Presented by The Hudson River Valley Institute and hosted by Marist’s Office of Alumni Relations, the event is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required. Register at: www.maristconnect.marist.edu/handelkrom2021
