As we look ahead to the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Spring 2021 issue opens with Kieran O’Keefe’s timely study of Hudson River Valley Loyalists. The issue also includes sixteen pages of color illustrating James McElhinney’s exploration of the Hudson River School in the tradition of expeditionary and landscape painting.  Jennifer Lemak and Ashley Hopkins-Benton share an adapted version of their 2020 Handel-Krom Lecture on Hudson River Valley History, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial 2017 & 2020;” their article is illustrated with images and artifacts that were featured in the New York State Museum’s 2017 exhibit on the same. Marianna Boncek’s investigation of a mysterious and short-lived agricultural commune sheds light on the community’s legendary afterlife, even as it illustrates the difficulty in researching marginalized communities. Finally, Kasey Calnan shares the story of a significant but ill-fated gatehouse and a series of heroic efforts to save it.
