Historical Description:

The home of Eleanor Roosevelt was originally built as a factory for Val-Kill Industries. Eleanor made this building a home in 1937. Eleanor retired to the modest home at Val-Kill close to the Hudson River after her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died.

 

The Site:

The grounds of Val-Kill boast flower gardens, fields, trails and a pond. The site offers a guided tour of the fully furnished cottage. Some tours have a special theme such as Eleanor’s political activities domestically and abroad as well as focusing on her personal life. Visitors also have the option of bird watching, nature walks and hiking.

 

Directions:

From the New York State Thruway (I-87)

Exit 18 (New Paltz) to Rt. 299 east to Rt. 9W South. Take Rt. 9W South to Mid-Hudson Bridge. Cross

Bridge and exit Rt. 9 North (Hyde Park). Vall-Kill is located on Rt. 9G in Hyde Park. From the Taconic State Parkway Northbound:

Exit at Rt. 55 West (Poughkeepsie) to Rt. 9 North (Hyde Park). Vall-Kill is located on Rt. 9G in Hyde Park. From the Taconic State Parkway Southbound:

Exit at Rt. 199 West (Red Hook) to Rt. 308 West (Rhinebeck). Take Rt. 308 West to Rt. 9 South (Hyde Park). Vall-Kill is located on Rt. 9G in Hyde Park. From New York City:

Take the Henry Hudson Parkway (Rt. 9A) North to Sawmill River Parkway. From Sawmill River Parkway North, exit to the Taconic State Parkway North. From the Taconic, exit at Rt. 55 West (Poughkeepsie) to Rt. 9 North (Hyde Park). Vall-Kill is located on Rt. 9G in Hyde Park.
