Historical Description:
President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Library to ensure the preservation of valuable historic documents, books, and memorabilia that he had accumulated during his lifetime. The Library was built in 1939 with the Museum section of the building being opened in June of 1941. The Library’s grand opening was delayed as a result of World War II.
President Roosevelt, serving his third term and voted into a fourth frequently visited the Library to sort his records. This is also where he delivered some of his famous “fire-side” chats.
The Site:
The Museum offers seven exhibits on a vireity of themes, including the New Deal and World War II. Others include “The First Fifty Years,” a history of Franklin Roosevelt from his childhood to his service as Governor. The “Presidential Years” exhibit showcases President Roosevelt’s challenges and accomplishments throughout his years in office. The museum also hosts a gallery on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. The Library is open for research and contains more than 17 million pages of documents as well as sound recordings, photographs, motion picture films and videos. President Roosevelt’s home, Springwood, is also on the property. Springwood has a variety of exhibits as well as the Rose Garden and gravesite of FDR. Tours of the home are available.
